The Project

The successful two-year long North-American experience with Comprehensive Sickle Cell Centers , references for clinical researches on sickle cell disease, has inspired the design of CEHMOB-MG project.

The project for CEHMOB-MG creation submitted to the Brazilian Health Ministry also came from the urgent necessity to organize an institutional space to provide sickle cell people with wide-ranging assistance and support, such as social inclusion and black people-oriented health policies. Another important reason for CEHMOB-MG creation lies on result analyses of neonatal screening regarding sickle cell disease. The analyses started in 1998 have pointed out an incidence of 1 child with sickle cell disease per 1,400 children born in State of Minas Gerais.

According to the project, CEHMOB-MG should be an important ally in supporting international cooperation agreements. It should promote connections and integration between international institutions and those involved in the Neonatal Screening Program carried out in the whole State of Minas Gerais.

A remarkable direction of CEHMOB-MG project focuses on education. Providing health professionals, researchers, teachers and general population with information about sickle cell disease is one of the most important issues of the project.

CEHMOB founding represents the merger of institutional efforts that boosts a single sickle cell disease-related policy in State of Minas Gerais.
