Special Agency for Policies on Racial Equality was founded by the Brazilian Federal Government on March 21st, 2003, on the International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The Agency founding stands for the acknowledgment of historical struggles waged by Brazilian Black Movement. The Agency mission is to put forward national-level actions against racial inequality.
In short, Special Agency for Policies on Racial Equality aims at:
- Promoting equality and protecting both individuals’ and racial and ethnic groups’ rights from discrimination and other ways of intolerance;
- Keeping abreast of and coordinating policies on racial equality from different ministries and Brazilian federal organs;
- Articulating, promoting and keeping abreast of several cooperation programs held with national and international, public and private organizations;
- Promoting and keeping abreast of completion of international agreements and conventions on promotion of equality and elimination of racial and ethnic discrimination signed by the Brazilian government.
- Assisting Brazilian Ministry of International Relations to develop international policies aiming at closer relationship between Brazil and African countries.
