Jessé Accioly Award

This award of $ 2, 000.00 BRL provides a tribute to an honorable physician born in Bahia, Brazil who proposed - simultaneously with the North-American James Neel - the hypothesis of an autosomal recessive inheritance for sickle cell disease.

Jessé Accioly’s paper, entitled "Sickle cell disease: report of a case with infantilism," was fully published in Arquivos da Universidade da Bahia, Volume II, 1947. James Neel, in this very year, studied that hypothesis in his review article: “The Clinical Detection of the Genetic Carriers of Inherited Disease” published in the Journal Medicine. He corroborated Jessé Accioly’s hypothesis in the journal Science by studying 21 families of children with sickle cell disease two years later.

The prize will be delivered with a certificate given by the Ministry of Health, on October 7.
