Presentation letter

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The realization of the 5th Brazilian Symposium for Sickle Cell Disease and other Hemoglobinopathies | Pan-American Meeting for Sickle Cell Disease - PAHO / WHO follows the recent and intense sequence of events promoted by the Ministry of Health in SCD area. One of the results reached by the coordination board for blood and hemoderivatives policy was to expose the relevance of the pathology in public heath context in Brazil in an irreducible way and start an organization of the services coherent to integral attention since the moment of the early diagnosis in newborn screening until the beginning of treatment.

Beginning with its recognized advances not only in Brazil but also in Pan-American context, PAHO / WHO assumes the role of recommending the policies for Hemoglobinopathies in Brazilian countries and it also plays the role of spreading acquirements and experiences which should be useful for all people involved with sickle cell disease in our continent.

Considering this scenery, the Symposium to be held in Belo Horizonte Minas Gerais on October 3-7, 2009 will host professionals of health services, researchers, social control representatives and managers from Brazil and other countries. At this time, the main focus will be the discussion about new practices in relation to scientific, clinical and care aspects of the treatment and follow-up of people with sickle cell disease and thalassemia.

The experience of foreigners professionals from three different continents associated with the Symposium multidisciplinary aspect will be an important reinforcement to enrich the discussions and debates concerning the disease.

We are sure that your participation on the 5th Symposium will contribute to the success of the event.

Best wishes,

José Nelio Januario, M.D.  -  Mitiko Murao, M.D.
